Day 2

Yesterday, before we went back home, we prepared a solution by dissolving tungsten in water. Since tungsten is very insoluble, we put it on the magnetic stirrer machine and left it overnight. Today, we did Electrodeposition; the deposition of a substance on an electrode by the action of electricity (especially by electrolysis)!

First, we prepared the samples shown below. We peeled off the blue paper covering the conductive white layer slightly and paste the shiny brown color paper (Fig 1).

 Figure 1

Secondly, we prepared the set-up below (Figure 2). We peeled off the blue paper, attached it to the metal clip and dipped inside the prepared tungsten solution. Then we carried out 3 sets with time intervals 400s, 600s and 800s respectively. Color change from blue to colorless is observed.

Thirdly, we did outer-layer coating by plastics using some very hot stuff to stick them (Figure 3) and tested the color change.

Stay tuned! :)
